Dental Technician (DT) - Navy Enlisted Rating Dental Technician (DT) - Navy Enlisted Rating General Info: Note: The Navy Plans to merge this rating with the Hospitalman Rating (HM) rating, effective 1 October 2005. For details, see NAVADMIN 214/05. Dental technicians perform duties as assistants in the prevention and treatment of oral disease and injury and assist dental care professionals in providing dental care to Navy people and their families. They may function as clinical or specialty technicians, dental administrative personnel and dental care providers at dental treatment facilities. They also serve as battlefield technicians with the Marine Corps, rendering emergency oral/ dental treatment to include initial treatment in a combat environment. Qualified dental technicians may be assigned aboard ships, Fleet Marine Force units, Seabee units, and branch dental clinics. Dental technicians normally work closely under the supervision of a Navy dental officer. This is a five-year enlistment program. What They Do: The duties performed by DTs include: assisting health care providers in the prevention and treatment of oral disease and injuries; preparing dental materials and medications; exposing and processing dental X-ray films; rendering emergency dental first aid; instructing patients in oral hygiene; performing dental administrative, supply and accounting procedures; maintaining treatment records and reports; chair side assists. Detailed List of Required Duties ASVAB Score: VEMKGS149 or VEMKCS153 Other Requirements: Must have normal color perception. 60-month obligation. Notes: Applicants must be informed that they will be assigned to duties involving direct patient care and clinical services and may be assigned to the Fleet Marine Force for duty. A licensed physician or dentist licensed or graduate of medical or dental school in any country is not eligible for this rating. No history of drug abuse or commission of offenses involving alcohol, narcotics or other controlled substances with the exception of experimental or casual use of marijuana. Applicants must be of the highest standards as requirements are strictly adhered to before accession into the HM /DT community. Technical Training Information: Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through formal Navy school training. Advanced technical, specialty and operational training are available in this rating during later stages of career development. Sheppard AFB, TX 60 calendar days Materials and procedures used to assist dental officers Individualized instruction and practical application After A school, DTs may be assigned to Naval Dental Centers/Clinics, Naval Hospitals, Branch Dental Clinics at shore stations in the United States or overseas, dental clinics aboard ships, mobile construction battalions (Seabees) or in dental companies with the Marine Corps. If initially assigned to a Fleet Marine Force (FMF) unit or the Seabees, DTs first go to Field Medical Service School at Camp Pendleton CA, or Camp Lejeune NC, for five weeks of specialized training required to provide dental medical services in the field. During their careers in the Navy, DTs usually spend 30 percent of their time assigned to fleet units or FMF units and 70 percent to shore duty. Not spending too much time there than we need.Rather, spending just enough time to make peace, sometimes seek forgiveness, gain clarity and make sense of all that we are trying to do.I thought of that on my recent trip to Washington, DC. I lived in Washington for four years, from 2008â€"2012. I found it interesting to return to a place that I’m not from, and yet very much shaped me into the man I am today.You see, if there’s one, very valuable piece of wisdom that I’ve learned over time it’s this:If we’re going to have a bright future, we need to grow and prosper from the lesso ns of our  past.Good and Bad.Our biggest mistake is when we ignore our experiences. If we don’t spend the time to extract every ounce of wisdom that we can from them.One thing I thought about- and used to really bother me, to be honest- was how lazy I used to be. I simply didn’t push myself hard enough. I avoided really challenging myself out of fear. It’s why I’m such a huge proponent of embracing the fear in your life and using it to drive you. As they say, “What’s in the way, is the way.”As I arrived back in DC, memories came back to me. Yes, I had a busy management consulting job that at times was stressful. But, on the whole, I had the time to pursue my passions. I just didn’t push myself hard enough. Only toward the final 1â€"2 years that I was there did I start to see more of my what my potential future looked like.I began coaching high school basketball. I grew closer in my relationship with God. I started doing a lot of writing, but at that time, only for myself. I rekindled the relationship with my now-wife and ultimately proposed to her. That was the best action I took.All great things.But for a while there, I was immature. I think to a certain extent, I paid the price as I continued in my professional career. I didn’t so much get better at my job, as I did tread water and do “just enough.” I didn’t reach my potential. I didn’t put all the pieces together. I was much more concerned with going out to have fun.With the benefit of reflection, I’m now really proud of the life that I’m living. I’ve become much more driven. I’ve pushed myself to do things that I’m really proud of. So much of my focus went from being about me, to now being about others.I’m much more passionate about helping others and figuring out how to support myself and my family by doing so. These things required going through trials of adversity. They required hard work and deep thinking. And like I mentioned, they required some mental and emotional pain . I kicked the can down the road for far too long. Thank God I made amends and changed my ways.Does this resonate with you? What have you put off in your life? Last month, ASME co-sponsored the 2013 Diversity and Inclusion Fuels Innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Capitol Hill Day, which was organized by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). The event, now in its fourth year, differs from other science and technology advocacy days on Capitol Hill because it focuses solely on the need to strengthen the diversity of the STEM workforce. This years Capitol Hill Day events consisted of training for participants and a Capitol Hill reception on March 20, followed by a Capitol Hill breakfast and Congressional visits on March 21. The event was made possible by a grant from the S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation. SWE President Alyse Stofer (left) presented Phil Hamilton, former ASME Associate Executive Director of Strategy and Outreach, with the 2013 SWE President's Award. Hamilton, who retired from ASME in January, was recognized by SWE for his leadership and commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, and for his help in fostering an enduring partnership between ASME and SWE. SWE President Alyse Stofer served as the moderator for the forum, which attracted 84 participants, including three ASME leaders: Loretta McHugh, member of the ASME Foundation Board and the Committee on Organization and Rules; Julie Bachmann Kulik, chair of the Philadelphia Section and member of the Energy Committee and the Board on Research and Technology Development; and Eduardo Barrientos, vice president elect, Affinity Communities. Kulik and Barrientos are also members of the ASME Diversity and Inclusion Strategy Committee. The instructional portion of the meeting included a training session focusing on how to advocate successfully on Capitol Hill. This session featured an overview of current public policy issues related to women and STEM and a discussion of the current tight fiscal climate on Capitol Hill. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) discussed her new bill, the STEM Opportunities Act of 2013, during Capitol Hill Day. Several congressional and administration champions of STEM and diversity-related issues also received awards. These advocates included the Honorable Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), recipient of the 2008 SWE President's Award; the Honorable Richard Hanna (R-NY); the Honorable Donna Edwards (D-MD); the Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX); and the Honorable Patricia Falcone, associate director for National Security and International Affairs at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. At the reception, Rep. Johnson also announced the introduction of her new bill, the STEM Opportunities Act of 2013, which combines two bills that she had introduced in past Congresses, the Broadening Participation in STEM Education Act and the Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Act. Nike gets accused of 'hostile' culture to women in new suit Nike gets accused of 'hostile' culture to women in new suit Four ex-Nike employees said that they endured a “hostile” work culture at the sportswear giant and were paid less than their male peers, according to a lawsuit seeking class-action status that was filed on Thursday in Portland.The suit said that the company failed to address women’s complaints. “Women’s career trajectories are  blunted  because they are marginalized and passed over for promotions,” the complaint alleges. “Nike judges women more  harshly than men, which means lower salaries, smaller bonuses, and fewer stock options.  Women’s complaints to human resources about discrimination and harassment, including sexual  assault, are  ignored or  mishandled.  Male bad  behavior is rarely penalized.  For a  woman to  succeed at Nike, she must far outshine  her male counterparts.”Plaintiff Kelly Cahill, who worked at Nike for four years, said that she was paid $20,000 less than a male peer in 2017. As part of the employees’ demands, they want Nike to institute †œreliable” standards for performance and pay decisions.Nike lawsuit alleges gender discriminationNike was already in hot water for a poor work culture before the lawsuit. Earlier this year, a group of female Nike employees began an informal survey about sexual harassment and discrimination they faced at the company, which kickstarted a more formal inquiry. The executive purge that has occurred after this workplace behavior investigation included Trevor Edwards, the Nike brand president.To address compensation gaps found in the internal review, Nike  said in July that it would adjust pay for more than 7,000 staff out of its 74,000 employees around the world to give “more competitive pay” and to “support a culture in which employees feel included and empowered.”

It doesnt cost anything  but time. It supports on-going coaching and development efforts. And best of all, most employees say they want more feedback than they are getting. However, many managers are hesitant to deliver feedback. Here are some ideas to make the process easier.   Why Managers Hesitate to Deliver Feedback Although most people will  say  they want feedback, most of us really dont respond very well to it. Its just human nature. What we  really  want is positive feedback. We like to hear positive things about our performance and while we know that the other kind of feedback (constructive) is valuable for our development, we dont appreciate hearing what sounds to us like criticism.   When we hear about something that challenges our self-perception of who we are, a basic psychological fight or flight survival mechanism kicks in. In many cases, once employees have a chance to process it, they may benefit from it in the long run. However, the immediate reaction is often to rankle at the input.   Managers understand that employees are uncomfortable receiving  criticism and this feeds their own hesitancy to deliver it. In many instances, a manager is concerned that he/she will risk damaging a relationship with an employee if they offer criticism, and they delay or avoid giving it. Another reason employees feel they don’t get enough feedback is that most managers have not been trained  on delivering feedback and are not very good at it. Becoming good at it requires training, followed by consistent practice. Delivering feedback does not have to be frightening, uncomfortable or difficult. With practice and patience, managers can improve their comfort and confidence with giving it  and employees will appreciate the improved developmental support.   10 Tips for Delivering Effective Feedback: Start with examining your intentions.  What’s the purpose of the feedback? Is it to punish the employee, get it off your chest to make you feel better, or is it truly help the employee improve because you care about them? Feedback is personal, and your intention will affect the way your message is delivered and received.Make giving positive and critical feedback a frequent event.  Instead of saving feedback for a big event, like the annual performance review, make giving feedback a regular part of your day-to-day conversations and meetings. Ask for feedback.  When a manager asks for feedback, it helps establish  a foundation of mutual respect  and partnership. By role modeling receiving feedback non-defensively, employees will learn to do the same.Be Immediate and timely.  Make sure the feedback is as closely connected to the behavior as possible, otherwise it will lose its impact.Ask for permission.  Before giving feedback, ask, “Do your mind if I share some feedback with you that I think will help you be more effective?”Focus on a specific behavior, not the person. In other words, make the feedback about the what, and not the “who.” Explain the impact of the behavior  Ã¢€" on you, and/or others.  Ã¢€œSusan, when you cut Jamie off in the meeting, I noticed she looked irritated and clammed up for the rest of the meeting. When you don’t hear a person out and interrupt them, they will probably feel disrespected and no longer want to contribute. When the entire team doesn’t feel safe to contribute, our performance will suffer.”Allow the feedback to sink in.  Let the person process the feedback. Listen empathetically.If the person doesn’t know a more effective behavior, ask if they would like advice. Once the behavior is pointed out, and they understand the impact, it’s often just a matter of stopping the behavior. Or, it’s obvious what they need to do differently. If they truly need help in coming up with alternative behaviors, give them specific examples. Offer to role play if that would help.  Coaching, using effective questions  is an even better way than giving advice. Dont Create a Feedback Sandwich.  Some say the best way to give critical feedback is to “sandwich” it between two pieces of positive feedback. Personally, I think most people will see through that technique and see it as manipulative. They may also just remember the positive, and forget all about the critical. Again, it is human nature; we all tend to do that. Dont Forget Positive Feedback! Positive feedback is as important as the constructive type. After all, the purpose of all feedback is to either reinforce the great behaviors that contribute to high performance or eliminate or improve upon behaviors that detract from performance. If you are going to give positive feedback, by all means, do so, and do it often. Use the same technique â€" timely, sincere, specific, and positive impact. Try to give positive feedback four to five times more often than critical â€" just don’t do as a way to sugar coat the negative. The Bottom Line: Remember, feedback is a powerful performance enhancement tool. Follow these ten guidelines and you will get more comfortable in giving feedback, and your employees will be more receptive to receiving it.
